Before becoming the “King of Country”, George Strait faced a turning point that could’ve erased his entire music legacy. In the early 1970s, Strait was just another young dreamer with a guitar, performing in small-town bars and military bases while serving in the U.S. Army. He tried sending demo tapes to Nashville, but no one seemed to listen. In fact, he was on the verge of giving up music altogether and going back to ranching full time. It wasn’t until his wife, Norma, encouraged him to give it one last shot that everything changed.
That final attempt led to a deal with MCA Records in 1981 — and the rest is history. Strait went on to become one of the most successful and respected artists in country music, with over 60 No. 1 hits and a style that blended classic Western swing with smooth, emotional storytelling.
One of the crown jewels of his career is the heartfelt ballad “I Cross My Heart”, released in 1992 as part of the soundtrack to the romantic drama film Pure Country, in which Strait also starred.
